Introduction:

  • Bats: Friend or Foe?
  •  A WebQuest for Grade 5
  •  By: Ellen Nicolau and Kenzie Murray- Loras College-Instructor –Rebecca Monhardt

This WebQuest was designed to provide students with information on three species of bats in the prairie and Midwest area.  It was also designed to allow students to use the skills of compare and contrast for a mammal that has more than one species.  By using these compare and contrast skills, students also gain the skills to make a final conclusion of whether bats are positive or negative animals in our environment.

Learners:

  • ·         This lesson was designed for 5th grade students.  The main subjects incorporated in this lesson are Life Science, Language Arts and Reading, and Computer Technology.
  • ·         All information used related to the URL websites can be found in the credits section.
  • ·         All worksheets are in Word Documents and can be replicated/printed.

Curriculum
:

  • This lesson addresses the learning standard in teaching science for the State of Iowa in the area of Life Science
  • Students can understand and apply skills used in scientific inquiry.
  •   (Grade Level Indicator: Understand and apply the processes and skills of investigation  Benchmark B: Students can analyze and interpret scientific information.  Grade Level Indicator: Analyze and interpret information from scientific studies)
  •   Students can understand concepts and relationships in life science.  (Grade Level Indicator: Describe and understand life cycles.)

Process:

Ready for your mission?

STEP 1:

·         First, you will surf the internet using the websites listed under "Bat Links" for information on bat.

Bat Links:

STEP 2:

  • Next, you will use each of the website to answer the questions in your Research Logs for each of the three bat species.
  • Make sure you are filling out the correct log for the correct bat!!

This lesson is organized for students to work on for several periods of science class.  It could take up one week’s worth of lessons, or until the students complete it.  Students will work on this individually and therefore it is single disciplinary.

Resources:

Only resource needed is the book Stellaluna by Janell Cannon for the Conclusion section of the lesson.  All other resources are provided on the WebQuest!
